News regarding Lake Manassas.

I’ve received word that at the the Utility commission meeting this Thursday, there is going to be a discussion about Lake Manassas and public access to the lake.   At one time, the City had  a lease with a landowner that provided public access, a boat launch along with a bait and tackle shop.  Complications arose during negations for a new lease with the land owner, and then September 11 2001 happened.

At that point, it seems the City decided to close off access to the lake first under the worry about the infestation of snails, and then concern over a terrorist attack.   The last excuse is pretty flimsy when you consider that other local jurisdictions did not close off access to their public water lakes.  In fact, I’m not aware of any jurisdiction anywhere in the Nation that has closed off access.

In the mean time, the development around the Lake(the City just owns the lake) in Prince William County has continued.    Though, the City and Prince William County have many shared service agreements and work together on many issues, there seems to be none of that in trying to allow public access again.   I know the City did attempt to find a new access point but failed due to a number of reasons, including unwilling land owners who obviously are holding out for a more financially rewarding land sale for other purposes besides a boat ramp.   Though, I’m pretty sure the old access point is still undeveloped and a deal could possibly be worked out if both the City and the land owner worked in good faith.

There is going to be an employee of the game and fish department at the meeting.  Let’s hope this is the first step in getting public access to the lake.

Here is a link to the City web page detailing the meeting.  http://www.manassascity.org/CurrentEvents.aspx?EID=3987

  1. As far as I know it is still above water. It may not be in the best of shape given the neglect, but it should still be useble with a little TLC.
